However, one Monday morning, bright and early, my brother phoned to ask if I would like to take a road trip with him. How could I pass it up?

And just thirty minutes later there was a knock at my front door and my brother was there waiting for me. He stood there with leather gloves in hand and brand new riding glasses over his eyes and looked very pleased with himself. When I asked about his glasses I discovered that they had cost quite a bit more than what I would have paid for them.

However, he did warn me that it was not a good idea to wear normal sunglasses when riding a bike but because I was young and knew it all, I ignored his advice.

But guess what? He was right.

Without any riding glasses, I found it to be a real eye opener as I travelled along the highway at 65mph. Or should I say, an “eye closer”. It didn’t take long for me to realize that with regular sunglasses, the wind came over the rims and my eyes started to dry up. On top of that, I found that bugs, pebbles and other debris were still getting me despite me wearing glasses.

Somewhere around the 50th mile I was begging the biker gods for a place to get off the interstate so I could purchase a pair of glasses.

Needless to say, by the end of the day I had purchased my own pair of riding glasses. I never again went anywhere without them if I was planning to go faster than 55 mph. When the time came for me to sell my bike, I made sure to pass my brother’s advice on to the buyer and recommended that he buy a pair of riding glasses. Obviously I don’t know if he took my advice but I hope he didn’t have to learn the way I did.
