Lanzarote´s Hidden Secrets

Just like Tenerife and the other main Canary Islands Lanzarote has a reputation for catering to package holidaymakers. But independent travel has also been on the up over recent years. As it is now easier and cheaper to get to Lanzarote than ever before, thanks to new flight services operated by some of the leading budget airlines in the UK, such as easyJet and Ryanair. Making cheap returns available from most British airports from prices as low as €100.

More independent travellers means more demand for self catering accommodation. And this has resulted in the growth of the private rental sector. With thousands of Lanzarote holiday villas and apartments now available. And despite the fact that there are now plenty of attractive hotels and fincas in the countryside most visitors from the UK still prefer to book something in one of the larger resorts. With villas in Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen in great demand especially during the peak holiday periods.

Arguably, Lanzarote´s most famous talking point is its 300 plus volcanoes. Which were created by seismic activity during the 18th century that went on for over six years. As a result the interior of the island today looks like the moon – with lots of lava fields and spent peaks. With little in the way of flora and fauna able to grow or survive here. So it comes as something of a surprise to discover that this arid island can sustain its own wood.

El Bosque is located in the North of the island and is such as well kept secret that it isn’t even signposted and doesn’t appear on many maps. However this is a hugely popular spot with the locals, many of whom head here on holidays and weekends to enjoy a BBQ whilst drinking in the fabulous views down to the bay of Famara below. El Bosque is located en route to the breathtaking Valley of 1000 Palms, which is the greenest spot on Lanzarote. Thanks to the age old tradition of planting a new palm tree for every baby born in the nearby village of Haria. Where an atmospheric weekly market is also staged every Saturday morning, featuring stalls selling local cheeses and wines. And from where tourists can enjoy some fabulous walks around the folds and spurs of the valley.
