“There are set up claims that he got a bribe from an Albanian businessman from Kosovo so as to start the procedure to recognize Kosovo autonomy. If that enquiry gives results we expect, this country will also withdraw its recognition of Kosovo independence.”

In the piece I wrote in this week’s print edition I noted that many states find the Non-Aligned Movement’s meetings useful because they enable states to lobby and network. However in a stinging commentary (behind a paywall,) at Balkan Insight Milan Misic, the Washington hack of the Serbian daily Politika, disagrees that the whole shebang was mounted because Belgrade “needed something to boost its confidence”. It was merely a show of nostalgia for all its partakers disagrees Mr Misic and “dwelled on the past accomplishments of the movement. “

At the meeting the ex-Yugoslavs all sat together. They’d better be careful. Folk (specifically Croatia’s Nova TV) are raising questions. Why Ivo (Josipovic, the president of Croatia) was spending so much time with Boris (Tadic, the president of Serbia). 2 men of the same age, same background, same jobs, same issues, what a scandal…

In the meantime, as some Croatian journalists were obsessing about Ivo and Boris a tiny Croatian paper, the Makarska Kronika, appears to have a world-beating scoop, if true for course. In February I wrote about the close connections between the previous Yugoslavia and Colonel Qaddafi. The press then wrote that his spouse Safiya was initially Sofija Farkas, a Croat with Hungarian roots from Mostar in Hercegovina. On a more sombre note, Dimitar Bechev of the Sofia office of the EU Council on Foreign Relations writes about the “protracted death of democratic Albania.” Discussing the political conflict that has paralysed Albania for the last 2 years he asserts that both Edi Rama, the leader of the opposition Socialists and Sali Berisha, the prime minister are to blame . However Mr Berisha “must take the lion’s share.” He’s hell bent, asserts Mr Bechev, on gaining control of all of the Albanian establishments which still remain beyond his grip.

Why are standard Albanians willing to permit such de-democratisation? One reason might be that, unlike any other former Communist states, ordinary people see in the EU nothing different from Albania. To one side, across the Mediterranean, is Italy, with its unique make of game-show politics ; to the south, over the mountain ranges, lies broke Greece. If this is what it means to be an ECU state, many Albanian glad-handers can be excused for thinking they already live in one, or should qualify for membership.”

Not quite so dramatic, but still, alarm bells have begun to ring in Montenegro too. Thomas Roser, of the Austrian daily Die Presse has written about the spate of attacks on vehicles belonging to Vijesti, one of the country’s main dailies. Four have been torched in the last couple of months. Zeljko Ivanovic, the paper’s handling editor announces that the media situation in the country is awful and that the attacks are messages from people connected to orgainised crime which in Montenengro have consistently been thought to overlap with political interests that “they are stronger than the state” and thus Vijesti’s reporting about issues like this is useless. Who cares about the world economy when you can worry about media freedom in Montenegro. Watch this space, writes tagza.com.

The 1st September weekend on the Makarska coast is in the marking of the first Sep shifting of guests with a significantly larger number leaving than coming. One of the most requested destinations on the Croatian coast is the Makarska in central Dalmatia, with its clean sea, sun-bathed beaches and an established tourist custom. Many tourists from Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) visit the area, either for a weekend or full vacation.

An article published in the local newspaper Makarska Riviera, written by the newspaper’s editor in July, drew negative attention locally and regionally. The draft, titled Guests that are a Surplus by Ivo Corkovic, claims that “guests from BiH are not welcome as they don’t spend sufficient funds, pollute the sea and just occupy space on the beaches”.

At first the writer addresses the Problems in Croatian tourism generally, then turns attention to guests from BiH. Corkovic refers to travellers from BiH as “an elementary disaster which, unfortunately, cannot be avoided or eliminated”.

The tract drew negative public reaction on each side of the border.

Croatia’s Ministry of Tourism reacted quickly to Corkovic’s article in a PR release. “All guests are welcome to Croatia, regardless of their country of origin. There are no first-class or 2nd class guests,” Minister of Tourism Damir Bajs said. The ministry’s official information states that BiH holiday makers are the second in number after German holiday makers on the Makarska Riviera.

Some BiH guests have complained that they are treated according to the quantity of cash they spend vacationing in Croatia.

“I propose to spend my monthly income in Makarska. I don’t think I’m inexpensive, much less that I pollute the beach or the sea, but I’m sour to be treated as a less significant tourist,” Stjepan Knezovic from Busovaca claims.

Another BiH holiday maker, Amela Corbic from Sarajevo announces, “My family has been coming for vacations in Croatia for years ; it’s a custom (in our family). But this year I am going to go to Turkey. I would like to be given respect for my cash, of which one gets less and less in Croatia.”

Due to gigantic media attention and public indignation over Corkovic’s article, Croatian President Ivo Josipovic articulated his reaction looking for equal treatment of Croatia’s holiday makers.

“Every guest is welcome in Croatia, especially our pals from BiH. Most folks do not welcome guests according to the thickness of their wallets. Therefore , welcome dear folk from Bosnia and Herzegovina,” Josipovic said.
With Croatia’s traveller season at the pinnacle, the country is vying for each tourist and expectancies run high from this season.

“As a city [Makarska] and country heavily relaying on [income from] tourism, they shouldn’t permit an individual opinion of one newshound destroy their image, particularly considering the [geographical] proximity of holiday makers from BiH to this area. The issue will have an economic reflection in Makarska this year, and years to come,” Mirza Mehmedovic, BiH communications expert, told SETimes.

BiH ambassador to Croatia Vladimir Raspudic related that Corkovic’s article is offensive but pointed out the position of one individual doesn’t reflect the perspective of all.

“There is no question this article caused damage, but it expresses the position of one person. I predict that local Makarska residents will have a lot to say to the writer of this really unacceptable text, which doesn’t make a contribution to the development of good relations between BiH and the Republic of Croatia,” writes tagza.com.
