Question
I am planning a summer holiday to Montenegro in June. I have heard it’s a beautiful and untouched country, but do not know much else about it. Have you got any recommendations, for example : where to stay along the coast, and any ‘must-do’ activities while we are there? Jane, thru email
Answer
Montenegro’s coast is dotted with beautiful coves and old fashioned villages. Petrovac is a very pretty resort about halfway along the Montenegrin coast, however it can be busy. Try Perast, a ground-breaking and tiny town in the Bay of Kotor, boasting 16 churches and 2 little islands, which you can simply hop on a ship to (about £3) for some peace and tranquillity. Also in the Bay of Kotor is the modest town of Herceg Novi. Many people bypass it for the littler villages, but the walled Old City leads to a agreeable walk, and, as the water is more clear here at the mouth of the bay, you can cool off at one of the concrete swimming terraces.
After one or two days in the Bay of Kotor, either head south to Budva or inland to Lovcen Nationwide Park. Budva is an energetic coastal spot, and can be a bit of a love or hate destination as its renown has led on to garish bars and packed-out beaches. If this isn’t your mug of tea, Lovcen is the complete opposite. It’s a mountainous area offering great hiking and mountain biking in cooler climes than on the coast.
Contracting a vehicle is a way to explore this compact country and most major hire firms operate in Montenegro.
Question
I am travelling thru the Balkans this spring. Could you recommend the simplest way to get around and any downright must-sees? Is engaging a auto a pragmatic option, or is it more judicious to use public transport? Dana Esperanza, through email
Answer
You’ll find it incredibly difficult to get a vehicle hire company that will permit you to pick up a vehicle in one country and drop it off in another. I’d counsel opting for public transport.
A good journey to travel by train is from Zagreb to Sarajevo. The journey is stupendously picturesque and takes about nine hours (or you could choose to continue on to Mostar which takes twelve hours or Ploce, thirteen hours). You can’t purchase this ticket online you will need to get it at the station or on the train. It is a fixed-price ticket (less than £30).
You will feel that travelling by train speeds through some of the finest of the Balkans, so I would like to recommend using a combination of trains and buses. Go by bus allows you to appreciate the views and it’s generally less expensive! Eurolines is a good place to start (eurolines.com).
The must-sees on this route include Dubrovnik, for its beautiful walled old town, and Montenegro’s stunning coastline. I’d also advise you explore Zagreb for its atmospheric caf culture ; a great arts scene ; and close by Lake Jarun, for some relaxation and rest. Head to Albania for undervalued Tirana, where there’s lots of nightlife to supply a welcome distraction from all of the beach hopping.

Guard your arse
When travelling in malaria sectors, it is very important to slap some mosquito repellent on your bare arse cheeks in order to not get bitten while pinching a loaf. Remember, mosquitos, together with other evil insects, just love to hang around in hot, damp, third-world shitters.

In 2011, The Total Number Of Holy Communions Distributed During Mass In Medjugorje Went Above 2 Million For The 1st Time.
In 2011, the total number of Holy Communions distributed during Mass in Medjugorje went above 2,000,000 for the 1st time. The quantity of concelebrations by clergymen was similarly record-high in passing 40,000, also for the 1st time.
Priests were involved in 2 Medjugorje records in 2011 : Never before did so many of them come – and never before did they disburse so many Holy Communions to parishioners and travellers
2,027,900 Holy Communions would be sufficient if all the inhabitants of Houston, Texas, were to get the Body of Christ one time each. Yet the number doesn’t result from Houston, but from Medjugorje where more than 2,000,000 distributed Holy Communions in one year was registred for the first time in 2011.
The number climbed from 1,571,800, a rise of 29 percent compared with 2010 which was itself a record year. 1,378,600 Holy Communions were distributed in Medjugorje in 2009, according to parish statistics.
An all time high number of monks handed out the more than 2,000,000 Holy Communions. 41,094 concelebrations of Mass were registred in Medjugorje in 2011, up from 38,227 the year before. The figures aren’t detailed of the actual number of visiting monks, as most concelebrate more than one Mass during their stay in Medjugorje.
The present Medjugorje boom in Italy accounts for some of the progress, though only some of it. 8,171 Italian concelebrations took place in 2011, up from 7,270 the year before and 4,718 in 2009.
Also, you must visit Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Medjugorje is one of the hamlets of the Western Herzegovina municipality of Citluk in the former Yugoslavia. The name Medjugorje is Slavic and means “area between 2 moutains”. This true story happens in the Bijakovici section of Medjugorje. On the afternoon of June twenty-four, 1981, two girls, Ivanka Ivankovic, age fifteen, and Mirjana Dragicevic, age 16, were returning home from a walk. Looking toward the hill called Crnica, Ivanka saw a bright outline of a lady. She revealed to Mirjana, “It is the Gospa!” ( Our Woman ).
On June 25, the 2 girls returned to the hill with four others. Their names are, Vicka Ivankovic, age 16, Ivan Dragivevic, age 16, Maria Pavlovic, age 16 and Jakov Colo, age ten. A figure in white was calling them to come up the hill. The kids were somehow transported in some mysterious way to a beautiful Woman who calls herself, the Queen of Peace. The Woman gives messages to the seers for the entire world. To date, the Queen of Peace has left thousands of messages. At first, the messages were almost daily. Now, for the last one or two years, they come on the 25th of each month.
The idealists describe Our Woman as gorgeous beyond words ; radiant with holiness. Her talks with the kids have taken the kind of motherly sensitiveness and love, and she’s taken the role of both mum and catechist in advising and directing their lives. She greets them with, “Praised be Jesus, my dear children.” At the end of the apparition she is saying, “Go in peace, my dear children.” She appears to the 6 visionaries as a 3D real image and always appears among brilliant flashes of light. Her appearances usually happen about 6:40 pm each day. In Medjugorje, crowds of people come daily at this time to participate in the event with prayer, song, the rosary and the Mass, which is commonly concelebrated by 30 or more clergymen. The entire evening service lasts about 3 hours. And this has been happening daily since 1981! – as reported tagza.com
In A Speech Last Year At Tufts University In Massachusetts, TV Reporter Lisa Ling Shared One Of Her Own Private FAQs – No, She Wasn’t In ‘Charlie’s Angels.’
In a speech last year at Tufts University in Massachusetts, Television newshound Lisa Ling shared one of her very own personal FAQs : No, she was not in “Charlie’s Angels.” That will be Lucy Liu.
Then she told students what formed her world view. “The best education I have ever received was through travel. You’ll become more conversant, balanced and smarter,” she revealed, according to Abroad101, a study abroad blog that summed up the speech.
Ling, who hosts the TV show “Our America” on OWN and frequently reports on CNN, will appear at this weekend’s L.A. Times Travel Show at the L.A. Convention Center. I asked what places are on her bucket list this year, and she sent an email with “four places I’m dying to visit.”
Cuba : Since the 1959 Revolution, Cuba’s been wrapped in intrigue, off limits to most American visitors. But now, the country is about to open its doors just a little wider, and the uber-curious can get a license to go. What’s there to see? Everything — classic American autos, bongo-playing neighbors, Havana’s eighteenth century houses, Spanish Colonial buildings — but mostly it’s about absorbing the sights and culture of a long prohibited land.
Croatia : It is time to venture outside of the “euro zone.” That’s information from Travelzoo senior editor Gabe Saglie, who asserts, “Croatia is an ideal example of a place that’s exotic but still off the radar.” Dubrovnik, Split (where modern day apartment dwellers live elbow-to-elbow with history in the spectacular Diocletian’s Palace) and the Dalmatian Coast? Yes, yes and yes. And it’s a short hop to islands like Brac and Hvar for a quiet beach stint. Saglie says Croatia is still a top value for USA citizens, except in crowded July and Aug, because after all , Continentals do know about it.
Morocco : Last year’s Arab spring inspired the states king to float pro-democracy measures and enact a new constitution. Politics apart, the issue isn’t whether to go, but where to go : the Sahara Desert on a four-wheel trip ; Fez, Casablanca and Tangier to visit souks and sites the Berbers, Roman Empire, French and Spanish wanted as their own ; or beaches along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. Marrakech too is an option, particularly on a night tour of its exotic markets.
Mongolia : It isn’t that remote anymore, but still stunning. That’s Lonely Planet’s take on the Asian country that retains the untouched sweetness of the Gobi desert juxtaposed against 21st century herders speaking on mobile telephones and Net cafes in capital Ulan Bator. “Since the decline of communism, Mongolia has done almost everything in its power to open itself up to the world,” the corporation’s site asserts. Do not be concerned, there’s still plenty of time to sleep in a ger (nomadic tent), take a camel ride or go on a high-altitude trek — all some distance from the phone chat.
Ling also identified 3 places she encourages US citizens to visit this year : Nepal, for the attractive Himalayas ; China, which changes each day ; and the Greek island of Santorini, one of the most “beautiful places on the planet,” she writes, and likely pretty inexpensive thanks to the country’s debt crisis, writes tagza.com.

Croatia Is About The Size Of West Virginia And Has More Than A Thousands Of Miles Of Shoreline Along With Almost 1,200 Island Destinations, Many Uninhabited.
Croatia is about the size of West Virginia and has more than a thousand miles of shoreline and also almost 1,200 island destinations, many uninhabited. The most popular stretch of shore-and the one this guide concentrates on-is the section of the Dalmatian Coast that stretches 350 miles from the mainland city of Split south toward the medieval town of Dubrovnik. The region has 17 populated islands, including Bra?, Hvar, Vis, and also Kor?ula. All are within easy reach of one an additional and the mainland, linked by an elaborate ferry network.
So what’s the best way to plan a visit? The classic route is to fly into Split and also spend a day or two, then ferry southward along the islands, spending time as your interests dictate. You’ll finish up in Dubrovnik, where we highly recommend a new stay of several days (check out our Insider Guide.) You could also reverse this route effortlessly, and fly out of Split.
Like their Greek cousins, every one of the islands has its own interests, character, history, and topography. You’ll find that nearly all Croatians are very specific about times and their heritage, and that the actual land they live on usually has been in the family for ages. Throughout the centuries, the country has seen domination by Romans, Austro-Hungarians, Venetians, and also Nazis; it declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. (Most fighting in your community ended in 1995.) And while folks no longer talk incessantly from the 1991 conflict between Serbia and Croatia-though they will give you an earful if you have the time-the good reputation for the region informs daily life within surprising and often charming ways. It’s one of the most fascinating facets of a visit here.
WHEN TO Proceed
Dalmatia’s high season has traditionally recently been July and August, any time temperatures are around 80 levels and the average rainfall can be less than two inches per month. Summertime also means big crowds and also scarce hotel rooms. Plan with plenty of forethought, or consider visiting within April, May, June, or September, when the weather is a new tad rainier but still grand. You will discover the locals even more accommodating and places like the Blue Cave much more enjoyable. A single caveat: By October many of the ferries between the islands operate on restricted schedules, and nightclubs such as Carpe Diem sometimes close throughout the winter.
In Dalamtian Coast you have to see Makarska Riviera also. Makarska Riviera is a section of Dalmatian coast of Adriatic, about 60 kilometers long and only several kilometers wide, squeezed below towering mountain Biokovo. Sunny weather and long pebbly beaches get this region a popular tourist vacation spot. A string of settlements along the coast from the edge with the Omis Riviera on the northwest to the Neretva delta on the southeast.
We are very proud to offer you the large quantity of quality accommodation facilities in every of the places of the extremely beautiful Makarska riviera. Some of them are Makarska apartments for rent.
Ways to get THERE
The main hub for your Dalmatian islands is Split. Through the city block-sized chunk of land with Split’s harbor you can catch vehicles, trains, and ferries to the rest of region and The European Union, as well as shuttles to and from the airport (385-21-203-555; www.split-airport.hr)-recently made busier from the arrival of low-cost carriers Wizz Air (48-22-351-9499; www.wizzair.com) and easyJet (44-871-244-2366; www.easyjet.com), which started soaring from London in springtime 2006. Neither of these airways fly to U.S. so you’ll have to organize a linked flight from one of the significant hubs such as London, Frankfurt, Rome, or Paris. The major provider is British Airways from the U.S. to Split (stopping at Heathrow).
GETTING AROUND
Split has a multitude of car-toting ferries and also fast-boat catamarans. Jadrolinija (385-51-666-111; www.jadrolinija.hr) is the primary ferry company; tickets to Hvar, Vis, Bra?, and Kor?ula can be purchased with one of the kiosks scattered along the possess. While it’s not necessary to purchase seat tickets before you arrive in Split, it’s a good idea to check out the timetables online to secure a sense of how connections jibe along with your itinerary. Not all ferries abandon every day from every area: In some cases you’ll have to return to Split to connect to another island. From Split, ferries take regarding one hour to Bra?, and about a couple of hours by catamaran to Hvar, Vis and also Kor?ula, writes tagza.com.
A Beautiful Coastline, Beaches, Sea, Yugoslavia And War – These Were The Most Typical Replies In A Recent Survey About Perceptions Of Croatia.
Croatian tourism officially had a record year in 2011, and yet the season is still awfully short. A new survey uncovers perceptions of the country from Europeans who’ve never visited. A lovely coastline, beaches, sea, Yugoslavia and war – these were the commonest replies in a recent survey about perceptions of Croatia, according to a statement on Tportal.hr, according to a brief in the Croatian Times on Jan twenty-five, 2012.
The survey of 2,574 folks from Germany, UK, Denmark, Sweden, Poland and Spain, was overseen by Sinisa Horak from the Institution for Tourism, which asked its target sample what came into their head when the word ‘Croatia ‘ was mentioned. Not one of the respondents had been to Croatia, and roughly twenty percent replied that they could associate nothing with the country.
The survey was instructive, as it gave an insight into how Croatia was understood worldwide, with perceptions varying from country to country. Poles, Germans and Swedes made the association between Croatia and a lovely coast, beaches and sea, as did the Spaniards, who also had a feeling of history and culture, while the Danes and Brit the first association is war. The survey aligned Croatia more as an ex-Yugoslav state than a forthcoming ECU member.
The results aren’t surprising, but they do point to an area where the Croatian tourist board should be pushing its efforts – on improving awareness of Croatia and its holiday maker attractions worldwide. Alan Mandic, owner of boutique travel agency, Secret Dalmatia, agrees, as he said in a interview with Digital Journal :
“My clients come from late March to mid November so I am quite pleased with the length of “my” traveller season. The solution is straightforward : get Croatia on the map. Irrespective of how simple, it needs a major investment and perseverance from our administration / ministry apropos continuing promotion and targeting opinion-making targets to maximise the result. Just an example is generally to have Croatia featured, or at the very least discussed, in most well-liked US shows and newspapers that are worldwide distributed.”
The job of the Croatian traveller board to brand the nations tourism in the trail of the horrible war in the area was gigantic, and it merits great credit in the very efficient campaign under the slogan The Mediterranean as it Once Was, as the next generation of tourist came to learn a new country with great beaches and nightlife. Visitors mostly like to come in Split, Trogir,Makarska and Dubrovnik.
Before the break-up of previous Yugoslavia, tourism to Croatia was booming, with over 440,000 Brits coming to previous Yugoslavia each year, the second most well-liked destination after Spain, with most coming on packages with Yugotours. Back then the geography was straightforward, but the re-drawing of the map in Eastern Europe has caused bafflement, and there is a need to educate on the new reality. One of the common mistakes for instance, is to mix up Slovenia, an ECU member and part of previous Yugoslavia, with Slovakia, also in the ECU. Gaffes such as the fresh placing of Bulgaria in previous Yugoslavia by Fox Reports do not do much to help.
The break up of Yugoslavia causes bewilderment among an older generation who paid a visit to the area before the war, as was proven by some of the responses I received in a forum survey for another online writing site, earlier in the year. Asked about perceptions of Croatia, one respondent answered :
“Before the war, when I was living in Europe I used to go to previous Yugoslavia fairly often. It was the ideal vacation place. I believe the Adriatic coast is one of the most stunning in the world. But now I feel ignorant because I don’t know where the new boundaries are and even which country I would be visiting. Is Istria in the same country as Dubrovnik? I would need to perform a little research. I believe the war has indeed put folks off, though it might just be me. So if you could help folk get over their prejudged ideas or, worse, stupidity, you’d be doing a great job”, writes tagza.com.
While Hvar Continues To Grow As A Celebrity Destination, There Is Much More To The Island’s Tourism Offer.
The antics of Royal prince Harry in a nightclub swimming pool and the endorsement of Lonely Globe as a 2012 destination instructed only part of the story of one other successful year on Croatia’s premier island. After Another Successful Tourism Season In Croatia, The Nation’s Holiday Maker Board Has Sprung Kind Of A Surprise With The Releasing Of Its 2012 Promotional Video.
From ‘The Mediterranean as it Was ‘ to ‘The New Tourism Star of the European Union ‘, the Croatian Tourist Board’s new promotional video shows a marked change in approach and focus for 2012.
After another successful tourism season in Croatia, the national tourist board has sprung something of a surprise with the releasing of its 2012 promotional video, moving next year’s focus markedly away from its largest attraction – the stunning Adriatic coast – in favour of promoting more inland tourism.
The four-and-a-half minute video, a brilliantly produced piece featuring star Croatian cellist Ana Rucner playing Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, certainly grabs the notice, as she moves from the fields of rural Croatia to the trams of Zagreb and ultimately to the Croatian coast.
As a spectacular high level view of the entire country, it lays out the various nature of the previous Yugoslav republic’s toursim offer, and it shows a marked change in the tourism ministry’s target tourism, a very important sector in Croatia’s economy.
The nations tourism industry has recovered well from the devastation of the recent war in the area, principally because of a very effective promotional campaign under the slogan, The Mediterranean as it Once Was, whose focus was on the attractions of the Adriatic coast, with its wonderful stone walled cities, for example Dubrovnik, and desirable islands like Hvar.
The method worked, and the official tourism numbers reflect a formidable growth rate in the sector, which continued in 2011, with Tourism Minister Damir Bajs announcing a 7.6% increase in holiday makers in the 1st 9 months of 2011 of the reciprocal period in the previous year, while overnight stays were up 6.7%, according to local media reports.
The Croatian coast attracts lots of younger tourists, drawn to the beaches and party feel, an angle that was conspicuously missing from the new video, which focused more on the heritage, traditions and variety of the country.
The ministry could be banking on the fact that the coast is now adequately well promoted to sell itself, with Dubrovnik now an exceedingly sought-after destination, while the island of Hvar was recently named as Lonesome Planet’s number 5 destination for 2012. Actually the new official slogan – The New Tourism Star of the Western european Union – suggests a departure away from the coast, writes tagza.com.
